Birth Control Pills, Pregnancy and Acne – A Complete How-To Guide
Acne first comes about during adolescence, when hormone levels begin to increase. This sudden flucturation of hormones causes the sebaceous glands to go into overdrive. They start generating increased levels of such oils that end up becoming clogged inside the glands. When the oils can’t escape, acne results!

So it goes without saying that when there is a fluctuation in the hormone levels within the body, it can trigger an increase in sebaceous oil production, and therefore increases the chance that an outbreak of acne will likely occur. With women, acne breakouts are common while they are taking birth control pills and also when they become pregnant.
Using Birth Control Pills to Control Acne
Women who do take the birth control pill and who notice that their acne is getting worse should discuss the situation with their doctor. Different types of oral contraception have differing levels of hormones and one side effect of some contraception is an increase in acne. Switching to another brand may bring acne back under control.
Any woman who is healthy, and is at least age 15, who has begun menstruating and who has decided to start using oral contraception can discuss getting a prescription for a birth control pill with their doctor. There are several brands that help clear up acne but only one so far has been approved by the FDA for treatment of acne and that is Ortho Tri-cyclen.
It is important to note that taking the birth control pill as a way to treat acne should be the last alternative, after all other acne treatment options have been attempted without success. The birth control pill does have side effects and it must be taken exactly as prescribed to be effective.
Acne During Pregnancy
Women who have become pregnant often report an increase in acne, too. Many changes occur within a woman’s body in an effort to properly prepare the body for the growing fetus. The two primary female hormones at work in every woman’s body are progesterone and estrogen. Progesterone is more androgenic than estrogen, which basically means it is more like the hormones found in men. Increased progesterone during pregnancy can cause the sebaceous glands to produce more sebaceous oils than normal and that is what can cause outbreaks of acne.

If possible, the best way to handle acne during pregnancy is to realize that it is a short-term problem that will usually go away once the baby is born. If this isn’t possible, discuss your options over with a dermatologist who has experience working with patients during their pregnancy. After going through your situation, the dermatologist will be able to suggest treatment options that’ll make you happier with your appearance and that won’t harm your baby.

Low Dose Birth Control Pills Minimize side effects
Today contraceptive pills are designed to contain much lower doses of synthetic hormones in the 1960s when “The Pill” (with 50 micrograms of estrogen) first came on the market. The reason for this is to reduce the side effects of hormonal contraceptives. “That still did not help much,” you can tell, but here is some information about low dose birth control pills that can help you have a productive (no pun intended!) Some women can not tolerate the combination of estrogen pills do not lower progestin-only pills are prescribed. Estrogen seems to be the main culprit that side effects were to blame for “low-dose birth control pills” have been developed to minimize these. 0.02mg estrogen-containing pills 0.035mg.of are classified as “low dose” pills. Here are some brand names of “low dose” birth control pills: LoOvral containing 0.03 mg ethinyl estradiol and 0.3 mg and nogestrel Nordette contains 0.03 mg ethinyl estradiol and 0.15 mg levognorgestrel Ortho-CEPT (Reclipsen, used) contains 0.03 mg ethinyl estradiol and 0.15 mg desogestrel Desogen contains 0.03 mg ethinyl estradiol and 0.15 mg desogestrel Levlen21 containing 0.03 mg ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel 0.15 mg Seasonale / Seasonique contain 0.03mg of ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel 0.15 mg YASMIN YAZ and two more low dose birth control pills containing 0.03 mg and 0.02 mg respectively of estrogen but have a different type of progestin in the other pills called drospirenone (3.0 mg). Changing levels of hormones in your body can lead to side effects that vary for each individual. Hormones in maintaining a constant level in your body is the use of oral contraceptives that do not ovulate, uterine lining and diluted thickens your cervical mucus. These three events work together to prevent pregnancy. Alessa and pills such as Mircette are called ‘ultra low dose’ as the pills contain only 0.02mg of estrogen. These oral contraceptives are effective in preventing pregnancy but some women find they have more spotting and breakthrough bleeding with them than with pills containing 0.035mg or 0.03mg. (the norm today) of estrogen. Breakthrough bleeding and spotting often disappear after a few months in a low dose birth control pill. 0.02mg of estrogen is sufficient for contraception but the side effects of the location and progress of bleeding are more common with this type of ultra low dose birth control pills with low dose pills containing 0.030mg or 0.035mg of estrogen. Nursing mothers can use progestin-only pills a few weeks after giving birth as progestin does not affect milk supply like estrogen does. ‘Mini pills’ must be taken every day at the same time without interruption. If you miss just one pill or take more than three hours past the regular schedule, it is necessary to use a backup method of birth control during 48 hours after taking the pill later. disadvantage of the “mini pill ‘- apart from irregular and breakthrough bleeding spots, you may increase the risk of ovarian cysts and ectopic pregnancies. PCOS is a condition that can affect a woman’s menstrual cycle, fertility, hormones, insulin production, heart, blood vessels and appearance. “Despite the doubling of the risk associated with the pill, the absolute risk of a cardiovascular event in a woman taking the pill is low – women using the pill will not automatically have a heart attack,” said John Nestler, MD, professor and chairman of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the VCU School of Medicine. “However, our results raise the question of whether oral contraceptives are optimal for certain groups of women who are at risk or who are taking the pill for longer, such as women with PCOS.”
Birth Control Pills – A Suitable and Safe Method for Treating Acne
Birth Control Pills which are also recognized as Oral Contraceptives can effectively treat acne in many women. Before an approval of FDA, doctors used birth control pills for the acne treatments. But now there are many birth control pills, which are FDA approved, available for acne treatments. These pills include Alesse, Ortho Tri-Cyclen, and Yaz.
These birth control pills are not utilized as a primary or an initial treatment against acne. A doctor always tries for other options for acne and still if they haven’t got the result then they moves toward the oral contraceptive options. Even in some situations the patient wants to have a form of contraception then the doctor provides her this solution
The way it works:
Birth Control Pills are normally composition of hormones, estrogen and progestin. They change the hormonal prototypes and natural reproductive sequence of a female. As the oral contraceptive pills decrease the amount of testosterone in body, they habitually improve acne breakouts which are hormonal-based. As the production of testosterone is reduced, it also reduces the oil which is caused by the ’sebaceous glands’. So the possibility of pore blockages by oil is also decreased.
The level of testosterone may be lifted up by some birth control pills. It depends on the makeup of the birth control pills. Instead of treatment, in this condition the circumstances may go worst and acne increases badly. So if you are planning for using a birth control pill to decrease acne breakouts, you should first consult your doctor. The doctor will recommend a brand which will help you in treatment of acne.
Take birth control pills at the same time day by day. It may take time more than three months or sometimes longer than it to see any changes after you start taking these pills. It is quite ordinary for acne to go downhill before it gets better.
Thus these birth control pills can be useful in acne treatments for females who in addition want a birth control too. But only thing to keep in mind is before taking the pills, visit http://www.onlinedoctorprescription.info?c=aug14ps get the pills with online prescription. So, you may not have to suffer from side-effects.

Do Birth Control Pills Help Your Acne?
Since birth control pills or oral contraceptives are popular with many people, there just might be a chance that this approach to treating acne might gain ground. Birth control pills or oral contraceptives can control androgens from performing their tasks. But does it really work? There’s only one way to find out. When to Use Birth Control Pills?
The pill helps to even out the irregular flow levels of your estrogens and progesterone. You will want to use birth control pills if:
1) You regularly engage in sex with one or more partners and need oral contraceptives.
2) You regulate your monthly cycle through oral hormonal therapy.
3) You are taking the anti-acne drug Accutane.
The pill alone is all that’s needed by women who have mild acne and need oral contraceptive protection at the same time. Acne that is moderate to severe requires stronger treatment measures – an oral contraceptive which can be used in tandem with either topical or oral acne therapies.Alternative Contraceptive Methods Against Acne
If for moral or religious grounds you are unwilling to take the pill or switch to other contraceptive methods, you may want to consider other curative options such as anti-androgens or physical therapy.
The other methods of hormonal contraception like the birth control patches and rings affect acne differently and can sometimes aggravate it. Depo-Provera, a contraceptive injectable which contains synthetic progesterone, can even initiate a severe acne breakout from time to time.
Accutane (isotretinoin) is a very potent anti-acne preparation that has been linked to severe birth deformities. Women undergoing Accutane treatment are often prescribed birth control pills to stop pregnancy from occurring. Apart from abstaining from sex, the first line of defense in birth control for women taking Accutane is the pill.
Taking birth control pills for acne treatment has its share of advantages and disadvantages. Be on the safe side. Seek your doctor’s advice to know what is the right birth control pill for you.How Does Birth Control Pills Work on Acne Control?
The role of birth control pills in acne treatment is to keep androgens from affecting the oil glands. Birth control pills contain estrogen which regulates the female’s monthly cycle to discourage ovulation. Apart from inhibiting ovulation, estrogens help treat acne by:
1) Decreasing the release of free testosterone or androgen from the ovary
2) Preventing the released free testosterone from stimulating the oil glands to manufacture and release excess oil.
Estrogens can diminish the rising amount of androgen in your system by releasing great amounts of SHBG proteins that “capture” and stick to the androgens, preventing them from stimulating the oil glands to release excess oil that triggers acne.
The most effective oral contraceptives in the treatment of acne are the ones that have estrogen and progestin, a man-made progesterone, working in tandem. The standalone progestin pill, also known as the minipill, is a good oral contraceptive with less adverse reactions. The more recent progestins have the capability to show great improvements against acne.

Birth Control Pills: All About Combination Pills
The combination pills, one of the two hormonal contraceptive pills, contain two hormones named Estrogen and Progestin. There are mainly three conceptual combined birth control pills. Here they are:Monophasic Pills:A pack of 28 pills contain twenty-one active pills with Estrogen and Progestin while the other seven do not contain any hormones. In 2003, September was the month when the FDA (Food and Drug Administration of USA) has approved a routine of birth control pills for 91 days, which was known as Seasonale. If you follow this routine then you have to take combined hormonal pills up to 84 days (12 weeks) followed by 1 week of non-hormonal contraceptive tablets which are called placebos. If you implement this routine in your life then your menstrual period will come once at each three months. Multiphasic Pills:They are also known as Biphasic and Triphasic. These multiphasic birth control pills contain different amounts of Estrogen and Progestin. They are taken at particular period during your pill-taking program. Continuous Taking Pills:The multiphasic pill Lybrel, approved by FDA in 2007, was the first pills that can be taken continuously; without breaking your cycle of pill packets. You will find it in a twenty-eight day pack. If you are using this pill then you will not have a menstrual period. You may have to pass through some side-effects when you start taking this pill.Advantages of combined pills:• Usage of combined pills decreases the chances of endometrial cancer and ovarian cancer.• Also avoids the pregnancy which does not take place inside the uterus.• It reduces the bleeding during the menstrual period.• The usage of combined pills will decrease the amount of rigorous premenstrual symptoms.• They can be used as a treatment of ACNE and many doctors recommended the combined pill for this purpose.• The combined-pills improve bone density.• User’s menstrual cycles will be more normal.• These pills will decrease your unwanted hair growth, especially on the face.• These pills are quite reversible and perhaps that’s the pure reason why women love the pills.Disadvantages of Combined-pills:• While you are using the pills for the very first time, they may cause vomiting, nausea, headaches, spotting etc.• The usage of combined pills may cause hypertension and blood clots in rare cases.• These pills may take a part in creation of gallstones and sometimes in liver tumors too but in quite rare cases.Side-effects that may put you in trouble:Nausea, vomiting and headaches are some side effects that happened at minor level and during the first cycle of these pills. But there are also chances of irregular bleeding, weight fluctuation, breast tenderness, and also these pills may increase your breast size.If you want to get advantages of the combined pills then you have to take it as per the schedule and at the same time. Even your partner should not have any problem in using condoms. You must be enough healthy and young and must not be addicted of smoking. Thus there are some restrictions and regulations which should be maintained while using the combined-pills only then you can get advantage from the pills.

Birth Control Pills And Acne: Clear Mind Or Clear Skin?
Before you read this article, I am duty-bound to tell you that this article is for women only (though I am sure men will be curious to read it)!
To take or not to take birth control pills for controlling acne is a very sensitive topic, if not controversial! Is taking birth control pills to control acne is right for you? How does birth control pill work on acne? Can hormones in the birth control pill stop acne from forming? At least thousands of such mad trains must be rushing the mind of a woman, who is consuming the pills with the twin important purposes! Every pill creates fresh doubts, fears and complications in her thought process. Because research on this subject is still a kindergarten stuff and the fear of side-effects hang prominently in her mind.
Moral aspect of taking birth control pills is in itself a never ending debating topic. If it is intended to control acne, why it should be related to birth control pills? The alliance looks unholy. Is it considered as a cost-saving device? And if the birth control pills were to fail from the original purpose for which they are intended and acne appears on the face, who will protect the psychological balance of that women? One such bad case, is sufficient to pour cold water on the result of thousand good cases!
The skin of many acne prone women have responded positively and have indeed showed marked improvement, thanks to the intake of birth control pills. For the glow of the skin, women are likely to consider that no sacrifice, no experiment is great. What checks can be applied if such individuals start consuming birth control pills, to whom they are not intended at all! Apart from the humor element involved in these observations, over the years this problem is going to assume serious dimensions and certain tangible steps will have to be well thought out to check this.
When you take mild dose of contraceptives orally, estrogen-related side effects- headache, nausea and breast tenderness- may show their weak presence. The weight gain is also low.
So do you take birth control pills with the cure of acne in your mind? Make your decision very carefully taking into account the risk factors. Just for the greed of curing acne, why to risk your body to heart attack, cancer of the breast or blood clots? If you are a smoker, the condition will still be worse. Your present state of depression may be due to this pill-taking! Many more side effects are waiting in the wings to take over-fluid retention, dark skin patches, bleeding in the vagina, to quote a few.
So, do you want a clear mind or a clear skin? The bargain may prove too hard, that it may give rise to psychological problems. Therefore, take each pill and put each step forward, with utmost caution, firstly by preparing your mind very well.
For, this is a mind over matter topic. Therefore, CAUTION!
This time, you need to consult not only the dermatologist, but your dear gynecologist first!
